In Wandsworth all pregnant women under the age of 18, and their partners, who choose to have their baby at St George’s Hospital, are referred to Jade team. This is a small group of midwives who specialise in the care of young parents.
The team, based at St George’s Hospital, offer advice and support throughout pregnancy up to the birth of your baby. They will arrange to see you for your first visit by about the 12th week of pregnancy. At this appointment they will ask you questions about your past medical and family history and will also do some blood tests. They will talk to you about your care during pregnancy and make arrangements for follow up appointments.
Your midwife may offer you screening for sexually transmitted infections. If you think you might be at risk of a sexually transmitted infection (STI), it is worth discussing this with your doctor or midwife as an infection may affect your baby’s health during and after pregnancy.
If you don’t want to discuss this with midwife, you can always visit a genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinic for free and confidential advice and treatment. Most offer drop in services so it is not necessary to make an appointment.

Parent Education Classes
Young parents are also offered the chance to attend parent education classes. These classes are run by a midwife from the Jade team and are a good opportunity for you to meet other young parents-to-be, to ask questions and to find out more about pregnancy, birth and caring for your baby. Your partner or another support person is also welcome to attend.
It is very easy to get pregnant after you have a baby so you need to decide on the contraception you are going to use. The Family Planning Youth Co-ordinator will arrange a visit with all new mums under the age of 18 to discuss the methods available
If you have any questions or would like further information about the Jade team, you can contact them on 020 8725 2712 (Mondays only) between 9am and 4pm. You can also email them at Jade.firstname.lastname@example.org or click here to see their information leaflet
