Charcot House Community Garden Club

Join us for fun, hands-on gardening sessions at the Charcot House Community Garden for children aged 4–12 years and their parent or carer.

The club is run by Lila from Ascend and Bloom CIC, an experienced primary school teacher with a passion for outdoor learning, food growing, and helping children connect with nature.

These sessions are designed for all children who are curious about nature, enjoy being outdoors, or would like to learn more about how food is grown. Whether your child has never planted a seed before or already enjoys gardening, everyone is welcome.

Children will learn about the complete food-growing cycle, from planting seeds and understanding what plants need to grow, to caring for crops, harvesting produce, and tasting the food they have grown. Through practical activities, children will develop an understanding of where food comes from and the important role that soil, water, sunlight, insects, and people play in helping plants thrive.

Each session provides opportunities for children and their parent or carer to work together in the garden, building confidence, learning new skills, and spending quality time outdoors. Activities may include seed sowing, watering, weeding, composting, identifying plants and insects, harvesting fruit and vegetables, and seasonal gardening projects.

As well as learning about food and nature, gardening offers many wider benefits for children. It encourages curiosity, responsibility, patience, teamwork, and problem-solving. The garden provides a calm and welcoming environment where children can explore, get creative, and connect with the natural world. It is also a great opportunity to take a break from screens, enjoy fresh air, and make new friends within the local community.

Our aim is to help children develop a lifelong appreciation of healthy food, nature, and sustainability while having fun and getting their hands dirty. By seeing the journey from seed to plate, children gain a deeper understanding of how food is produced and are often more willing to try new fruits and vegetables they have grown themselves.

Sessions take place from 3:45pm to 5pm, and a healthy snack is provided each week. Children must attend with a parent, carer, or responsible adult.

Come and join us to dig, plant, grow, harvest, and enjoy the rewards of gardening together!
