Wandsworth's WAND and WAND+ cards

Image of white card on green background saying 'DC Register WAND Card'

Wandsworth's WAND and WAND+ Cards indicate that the card holder:

  • is either a Wandsworth resident or a child/young person who is 'looked after' by Wandsworth
  • is a member of the Disabled Children's Register (DCR) (if under 18)
  • has a significant level of special educational needs, disabilities or complex health needs.

To have a WAND Card you need to be a member of Wandsworth's Disabled Children's Register (DCR).  (This is done as part of the application)

This is not necessary for a WAND+ Card for those over 18 years old.

Application & Eligibility

The WAND Card is for children and young people under 18 years old with special educational needs, disabilities, or complex health needs.

The WAND+ Card is for young people aged 18 up to 25 years with special educational needs, disabilities, or complex health needs.

On application, you will need to provide proof of your child’s eligibility for the WAND or WAND + Card

This needs to be  ONE of the following:

  • Letter that confirms parent/carer currently being in receipt of Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for their child or a young person up to age 25 being in receipt of Personal Independence Payment (PIP), at any rate.
  • Letter confirming parent/carer being in receipt of universal credit including disabled child element.
  • A current document from a professional confirming a diagnosis of a special educational need, disability or complex health need which impacts significantly on them getting about and accessing services/activities in the community.

In exceptional cases, where proof of any of the above eligibility criteria cannot be produced, we would accept for consideration at our discretion additional information from a health/social care/ education professional, such as an EHCP, which outlines the child’s/young person’s special educational needs or disability which impacts significantly on them getting about and accessing services/activities in the community.

We don't need to see original documentation - please scan or photograph the documents and attach them to your email.

GDPR and the DCR, WAND and WAND+ card holders

The General Data Protection Regulation or "GDPR" – what does it mean for the information we hold about DCR, WAND and WAND+ members?

Organisations (like the Local Authority) must manage data that we hold about individuals, keep records about what information we have, why we have it and how long we should hold it. The attached GDPR Letter and Privacy Notice set out how we will keep your data safe.  A Word version is also available on request.

When you joined the DCR, WAND and/or WAND+ card schemes, we set out that we would “always handle and share your information using the guidelines set out in the Data Protection Act 1998, unless it put a child or young person at risk.”

Under the GDPR, we continue to handle and share your information with the same care, held in a secure computer database.  We will continue to use the information you give us on the DCR/WAND and WAND+ forms to:

  • keep you up to date with relevant service developments,
  • give you a voice to ensure the local authority, NHS and other services are aware of the demands and needs of children and young people with SENDs and their families,
  • help the local authority, health services and voluntary sector  in planning services and provision for children and young people.

We will delete our DCR, WAND or WAND+ records about you if you do not contact us to renew your membership every three years.  We will contact you by post and email to remind you that your membership is ending, but if we do not hear back within 1 month, we will delete your record.   We will also delete, amend or restrict your details should you request it  or should your membership circumstances change.

Additional information

Anyone with a child or young person with special needs can apply on their behalf to join the DCR, provided they are a Wandsworth resident.

You will need to complete separate application forms for each child applying

Once over the age of 18, a young person can apply for a WAND + card but they are not  included on the DCR as they are adults.
