Emanuel School
Emanuel School is a co-educational, independent (fee-paying) secondary school founded in 1594. Emanuel is a school for boys and girls aged 10 - 18 years old located near Wandsworth Common.
Emanuel was founded in Elizabethan times by Lady Dacre for the education of 10 boys and 10 girls. It was known at that time as Emanuel Hospital and was located in Buckingham Gate in Westminster. At the time Lady Dacre wrote that one of the main aims of the Foundation was 'for the bringing up of children in virtue and good and laudable arts so that they might better live in time to come by their honest labour'.
In 1873, the girls at the school transferred to Grey Coat Hospital and 10 years later the boys’ school relocated to the current site in Wandsworth, taking over one of the two buildings that made up the Royal Victoria Patriotic Fund for children orphaned in the service of the country.
The school became a voluntary-aided grammar school in 1944 until it resumed its independent status at the end of the 1970s. Emanuel returned to co-educational status in 1995.
