What is Music Therapy?:
Music therapy is a well-established, evidence-based clinical model where the child and therapist build a therapeutic relationship through musical interaction and play. This process aims to bring about positive change and accomplish individual goals. The therapist uses musical interventions to help the child reach their full potential, enhancing their physical, emotional, mental, and social wellbeing.
In music therapy, children have the opportunity to communicate and express themselves through sound and play, which is particularly beneficial for those who are non-verbal or struggle to articulate their feelings.
Who Can Benefit?
Music therapy can assist children from various backgrounds with:
• Communication difficulties
• Behavioural challenges
• Emotional regulation
• Mental health issues
• Low mood and depression
• Stress and anxiety reduction
• Processing traumatic experiences
• Coping with loss and bereavement
• Boosting confidence and self-esteem
What Happens in an Individual Music Therapy Session?
During a typical music therapy session, the child engages with a variety of instruments and singing, often through improvisation. The therapist may also incorporate songs, musical activities, or songwriting. No prior musical experience is required; the focus is on the child's unique exploration and use of the instruments.
As the therapeutic relationship develops, the child and therapist can reflect on and process difficult themes and emotions. They also share the joy of non-verbal communication through music.
