Personal Budgets

Personal budgets are available for support which is individual to the child or young person. They allow parents and young people more choice and control over the support they receive.

Personal budgets (some of which can be taken as a direct payment) are available to families and young people who:

  • from September 1st 2014, have an Education, Health and Care (EHC) Plan,
  • have been assessed by adult services or the disabled children’s team as needing social care services, or
  • from October 2014, are entitled to Continuing Health care services

Not all families will be entitled to a personal budget from all agencies. However some families will be eligible for a personal budget/direct payment from more than one agency. More information, including an eligibility flowchart, is in the guidance, "What are personal budgets" . We also have six examples of how a personal budget could be used.

You can read about using a personal budget, as a direct payment, to buy short breaks for your child in the new leaflet in downloads.

The Council and Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) have developed a personal budgets policy that sets out the entitlement and arrangements for personal budgets.
