The Early Years Pupil Premium (EYPP) is additional funding given to early years providers to improve the education they provide to some 3 and 4-year-olds.
Childcare providers can claim an additional £300 per year to spend on enriching your 3 or 4 year old child’s education.
For example they can:
- buy equipment to support children’s learning and development
- employ specialist staff to help children develop their speech and language skills
- enhance children’s life experiences by going on trips, offering dance and drama lessons
A family must meet at least 1 of the following criteria:
Economic criteria, receiving:-
- Income Support
- income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
- income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
- support through part 6 of the Immigration and Asylum Act
- Child Tax Credit (provided you are not also entitled to Working Tax Credit) and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190.
- the guaranteed element of State Pension Credit
- the Working Tax Credit 4-week run on (the payment you get when you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit)
- Universal Credit
Children are also entitled to a place if:
- they're looked after by a local council
- they have a current statement of special education needs (SEN) or an education health and care plan
- they get Disability Living Allowance
- they've left care under a special guardianship order, child arrangements order or adoption order
If you feel you are eligible for EYPP, please let your provider know.
Early years providers will receive the Early Years Pupil Premium (EYPP) payment in the same way they receive payment for Nursery Education places. This is usually paid termly.
EYPP funding is based on 570 hours per academic year. The funding rate is £302.10 per academic year, which equates to £0.53 per hour.
The EYPP funding will follow the child in the same way as the Nursery Education place.
We advise parents to only ask about the pupil premium when making a nursery application to their chosen childcare provider. Please see the table below.

Early years providers are responsible for identifying children in their setting who may be eligible for the Early Years Pupil Premium.
- Providers will approach parents to find out who is eligible for EYPP funding, in particular parents who were in receipt of an Early Education for 2 year old place.
- It is not guaranteed that all children in receipt of an Early Education for two-year-olds place will qualify, they will need to be checked when they turn 3.
We advise parents to make an application for the Early Years Pupil Premium when they are applying for a 3 or 4 year old nursery education place at their chosen Early Years provider. For example, if a parent has accepted a nursery education place at a school, they should ask the school to check if they are eligible for the Early Years Pupil Premium.
The Early Years Pupil Premium payment can be given to any Early Years providers registered with Ofsted providing nursery education for 3 and 4 year olds.
These include:
- Childminders
- Children’s Centres
- Private, voluntary and independent sector nurseries
- School based nurseries
- Maintained Nursery Schools
The Early Years Pupil Premium eligibility does not change once your Early Years provider has confirmed your entitlement. If you do have any concerns, please contact the Early Education & Childcare Service.
If you change address or move home your funding is still secure, providing you are still using the same childcare provider.
If you would like to change your childcare provider due to moving home or other reasons, you will have to make a new application for the Early Years Pupil Premium with your new provider.
Please note, as payments are made to childcare providers termly, if you leave mid-term, your new childcare provider will not be able to claim for the EYPP until the following term.
You will need to check with your childcare provider if you need to make any additional payments for your nursery education place. You may be asked for a deposit or a registration fee by an Early Education provider.
Please note: The Early Years Pupil Premium will not pay for:
- Additional fees
- Deposits
- Lunch
- Registration fees
- Uniform/Aprons
Regular monitoring of attendance will take place. If your child does not attend regularly, the place may be offered to another family unless there are exceptional circumstances. If for any reason you withdraw your child from your chosen childcare provider, you will not be able to take up a new place until the beginning of the next term. If you decide to remove your child from the childcare provider, you must inform the Early Education and Childcare Service immediately on 020 8871 7899.
