Wandsworth Community Feeding Service

This service is for children and young people from 0 to 11 years who have difficulty eating, drinking, or swallowing, or have significantly restricted diets/feeding aversions.  There are two pathways within the Wandsworth Community Feeding Service.  Some children might be on both pathways depending on their needs.  See below for more information on these pathways.

Pathway 1 - Community Dysphagia Team: for children who have difficulty eating, drinking, or swallowing.

There may be concerns about the safety of these children when they eat or drink, the development of their motor skills related to feeding, or their ability to eat enough food to grow.

This service offers access for children between 0-11 years to a Speech and Language Therapist who will assess the child’s eating and drinking skills, make recommendations to help with the child’s eating and drinking skills, and support the family and other carers to understand and put these in place.  The Speech and Language Therapist will also communicate with relevant team members in order to better support the child.  Depending on the child’s needs the team offers support across various sites, including to homes, schools and nurseries. Children must be under the care of a GP in the Borough of Wandsworth.

Pathway 2 – Multidisciplinary Feeding Team: for children who have significantly restricted diets and feeding aversions

This pathway is for children and young people from 0 to 11 years who have highly selective eating and feeding aversions.  This pathway is not appropriate for children with eating disorders (e.g., Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia, etc.)  The team supports children who have a GP in the Borough of Wandsworth.

The service offers access to:

  • Clinical Psychology – to explore and offer support around difficult behaviour patterns relating to feeding
  • Dietetics – to look at the child’s growth and nutrition
  • Occupational Therapy – to think about any sensory needs, as well as the equipment used at mealtimes
  • Speech and Language Therapy – to help keep the child safe, and develop oromotor movements for eating

Depending on the child’s needs, they may have access to clinic sessions, parent workshops, group sessions, and written information/resources.  The team offers support at the Eileen Lecky Clinic (2 Clarendon Drive, Putney SW15 1AA) and workshops for Under 5's at West Hill Enhanced Children's Centre (West Hill School, 5 Merton Road, London SW18 5ST).
