Forced Marriage Unit (FMU)

The Forced Marriage Unit offers advice and guidance on how to recognise the signs of a forced marriage. A trained professional provides free advice on what to do next.
This service is for women who may be forced into marriage or know of someone who may be forced to marry against their will.
A trained professional helps females with forced marriage when they:
- are faced with physical pressure to marry (eg threats, physical violence or sexual violence;
- are receiving emotional and psychological pressure (eg if you’re made to feel like you’re bringing shame on your family); and
- fear a friend or family member may be forced to marry.
Forced marriage is illegal in England and Wales.
The FMU can tell you how to ask the court for a Forced Marriage Protection Order.
