Universal Credit and Childcare

Universal Credit replaces six means-tested benefits and includes a childcare element.

Households are entitled to up to 85% of eligible childcare costs:

  • up to a maximum of £646.35 for one child per month, and
  • up to a maximum of £1,108.04 for two or more children per month.

Parents should speak to the Job Centre and local advice groups for further advice.

Also, see the Money Matters and Advice page.

The Childcare Element will not be removed within the assessment period even if the claimant begins work.

There will also be a Flexible Support Fund managed by the Job Centre.

Evidence of childcare costs can be presented at the Job Centre.

You may go to the HM Government website to find information about how Universal Credit is paid and the support it provides for people who are on a low income or out of work.

You may also find The Money Advice Service website useful too.

Please also look at www.childcarechoices.gov.uk for help with which childcare support would be best for you.
