Haemoglobinopathy Counselling and Information Service

Sickle Cell & Thalassaemia Information and Counselling Service aims to improve health outcomes for Wandsworth residents or those registered with a Wandsworth GP, who have been diagnosed with a major haemoglobinopathy disorder by improving knowledge and understanding of these diseases.
The aims of the service are to:
- Reduce mortality and morbidity amongst haemoglobinopathy patients by working collaboratively with the local acute trusts, primary care and voluntary organisations.
- Improve the health outcomes for Wandsworth residents who have been diagnosed with a haemoglobinopathy disorder or who are carriers of a haemoglobinopathy gene
- Provide relevant training, knowledge and understanding of haemoglobinopathy disorders.
- Decrease hospital admissions and support the delivery of care in the community
The service provides advice, support, and health care, to patients (adults and children) and their families/carers with sickle cell and thalassaemia living within the borough of Wandsworth. The service is also responsible for the antenatal and neonatal haemoglobinopathy screening programme in Wandsworth, and offers genetic counselling, referral for prenatal diagnosis and support.
