Rail to Refuge

Women's Aid has joined up with rail companies to help domestic abuse victims to escape to refuge accommodation by travelling for free on a train.

How the scheme works:

  1. a survivor will reach out to a domestic abuse service which is a member of Women’s Aid, Welsh Women’s Aid, Scottish Women’s Aid or Imkaan (including Respect’s Men’s Advice Line)
  2. the survivor will be referred to a refuge (if appropriate) and will be informed once there is a vacancy
  3. a free train ticket will be booked, by the refuge, for the survivor
  4. the ticket, and details on how to collect it, will be sent to the survivor's mobile phone. The survivor can either use the ticket as an e-ticket, or collect the paper ticket from the station using any debit or credit card (it is still free)

The survivor does not have to declare to anyone that the ticket was free, or that they are fleeing domestic abuse.
