Paddock School (Senior)

Paddock Senior School is a Wandsworth maintained special school for children aged 13 to 19 with severe learning difficulties. They may additionally have a diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Pupils are taught in classes of up to 9 pupils with a specialist teacher with usually 4 special school support assistants.  The children follow a topic based curriculum which is modified to take account of their individual learning needs.  Children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders are taught in ASD specific classes using a structured teaching approach TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped Children) and the school is an ASD friendly environment.  The post-16 department has a focus on functional Maths and English, with on and off site work experience. Paddock pupils work towards ASDAN accreditation. 

Paddock has a certified TEACCH practitioner, a qualified PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) implementer, a regional Makaton tutor, an Intensive Interaction specialist and trained PODD (Pragmatic Organisation Dynamic Display) teachers. There are two MAPA trainers who support all staff in positive behaviour management strategies.  All staff have regular training including training in ASD strategies.  Speech and Language therapy is central to the teaching, and communication targets are set and monitored termly in conjunction with the Speech and Language Therapists who work regularly in the classrooms. 

The Occupational Therapist works alongside teachers to develop implement and monitor programmes for children including Sensory Integration programmes and sensory diets.  There are also two multi therapy assistants who work directly to support the pupils.  Paddock has close links with CAMHS Learning Disabilities team, and with our Educational Psychologist.  The pupils have regular access to medical support though our school nurse and dentist.

Pupils have to have an Education Health and Care plan or a Statement of Special Needs which names this school.  In exceptional circumstances, pupils can attend on an assessment placement. 

Placements are decided by the council’s Special Needs Assessment Section in consultation with the school and the parents or carers. 

Other notes

Paddock School welcomes feedback about the school. They have a Parent Liaison Officer who runs regular coffee mornings and training sessions for parents. Any concerns about your child’s education should be raised with your class teacher in the first instance. If you wish to take your concern further you will need to follow the school complaints procedure, which can be found on the school website.
