Supporting mothers to Breastfeed Out and About in Wandsworth

The Equality Act 2010 has made it illegal for anyone to ask a woman to stop breastfeeding, or to do it somewhere more private or to leave because she is breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding in public can mean breastfeeding in front of a relative or friend in your own home, or in a public place, such as a cafe or shopping centre.

During a baby’s early days, you may prefer to breastfeed only where you feel most comfortable. But, as you get more used to doing it, you’re likely to feel more confident about breastfeeding in front of other people when you're out and about.

It’s common to feel anxious about feeding out and about, but remember that you are protected by the Equality Act to feed anywhere you choose and you’re giving your baby a great start in life by breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding Welcome Scheme in Wandsworth

Over 70 local cafes, restaurants, Children’s Centres, Medical Practices and other businesses have joined the Breastfeeding Welcome Scheme and committed to support breastfeeding women.

Look for the BFW sticker when out and about in the borough or search on www.breastfeedingwelcomescheme.org.uk for places local to you that are on the scheme.

Here are some things that can help when breastfeeding out and about:

• Practice in front of a mirror or with a friend to help you build your confidence
• Take someone with you
• Think about your clothing. What will help you feel most comfortable and feed easily?
• Try to observe your baby’s early feeding cues. Give yourself time to get comfortable before your baby starts crying.

• Start somewhere you feel safe and comfortable, like a Breastfeeding Group
• Check www.breastfeedingwelcomescheme.org.uk for places nearby that are part of the scheme
• Avoid the toilets. If you prefer more privacy some shopping centres and stores have feeding rooms.
