Sir Walter St John’s Educational Charity

Sir Walter St John’s Educational Charity makes grants to promote the education and training of children and young people under the age of 25, who are in financial need.   The Charity covers the London Boroughs of Wandsworth and Lambeth, with preference given to the Battersea area.

Who can apply?

A person aged under 25, who has lived in the borough of Wandsworth or Lambeth for at least six months.  There is a preference for those who live in the Battersea area.   All applicants must provide evidence that they and their parent(s) are in receipt of benefits or are on a very low income. Grants are only awarded to students who are following a validated, approved or recognised course.

 What can I get?

  • Grants are one-off and are for a range of educational needs; this can include social and physical training as well as study on school and college courses.
  • Student grants are towards costs that are necessary for attendance on the course, such as registration fees, travel, books and equipment.
  • The normal upper limits for grants are £500 for students aged 16 to 18 years, and £750 for students aged 19 to 24 years.
  • Lone parents who are in receipt of benefit can receive grants of up to £1,800 towards childcare.  People with special educational needs can be given help towards buying special equipment.
  • Grants are made to school children and students under 18 years and to full-time students on university degree courses only in exceptional or unforeseen circumstances.

How do I apply?

All applicants must provide evidence that they have a good prospect of successfully completing the course.  Students attending courses at South Thames College should apply to their college student advice service.

Students attending courses at other colleges should write or telephone, providing their full name, date and place of birth, present address and length of time they have lived there, the name of their college or school and the title of the course of study or training, including start and finish dates.   Applicants who then appear eligible for an award will be asked to complete an application form.

What is not funded?

Grants are not made to pupils at independent schools or to students on postgraduate courses.  Grants are not given towards general living expenses, study or travel abroad or student exchanges.
