Disability Living Allowance (DLA)

This is a tax-free benefit for children under 16 and young people over 16 with a physical and/or learning disability who need help with personal care or walking.

Personal Independence Payment or PIP replaced DLA from 8th April 2013 for people aged 16 to 64 with a health condition or disability, for children under 16, DLA still remains.

To be eligible for DLA, your child must need a lot more help or supervision than other children of the same age.  Support with care and mobility can be claimed from 3 months onward.

Once you start getting DLA it may increase the amount of other benefits or credits you are entitled to, such as income support, pension credit, housing benefit, council tax benefit, carer's allowance, working tax credit and child tax credit.
