Disabled Facilities Grant

Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) (Disabled Facilities Grants: Overview - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

Disabled Facilities Grants are capital grants that are available to people of all ages with a long-term disability to contribute to the cost of specialist home adaptations.

The grant may only be approved for specified criteria as outlined in the DFG legislation, for example: access into the home, access to toileting, bathing or washing facilities. The legislation also provides a definition of disability for the purposes of qualifying for grant assistance.

Examples of possible adaptations include (but are not limited to) installation of stair-lifts, level access showers and wet-rooms, wash and dry toilets, ramps, wider doors.

The local housing authority must identify the disabled person’s needs and what relevant works are necessary and appropriate to meet the assessed needs. In addition, recommended works need to be reasonable and practicable.

Occupational therapy services are involved with assessing the needs of the disabled person and making recommendations for adaptations or other potential solutions which will meet the assessed need.
